Interview with Brad
by David Jones
3eb fans got a chance to see the drum tracking process on 3eb.com recently. As far as drums go, do you generally track the whole song in one take and that's it, or is there a bit of punching in, overdubbing, etc.?
Ursa Major was pretty well rehearsed from playing much of it on the road over the last few years. As a result most of the takes are live takes. Usually I will record 3 takes and pick the best of them. The version of Standing Up For You recently posted is actually the 3rd take of the song but we ended up using the second take.
Third Eye Blind has a relatively devout following, especially considering the hiatus between Out of the Vein and Ursa Major. Do you have any speculations as to how the band’s been able to keep that fire burning over the years?
I could speculate but I really don't know for sure. I believe their is a depth to 3eb musically and lyrically that is not as widely acknowledged as I would like and I believe it to be the foundation of our longevity. Again, that is just speculation.
3eb fans have seen you picking up some live duties on both piano and guitar recently. How long have you been playing? Do you play any other instruments?
A guitar was always around the house growing up and I can't even remember who taught me the basic chords. I go through phases where I get into it then kind of drop it for awhile. Piano has become more of a staple over the last 4 or 5 years. It just makes more sense to me (I suppose because you can hit it). That may be it as far as instruments I play.
You’re typically regarded as “the quiet one” in 3eb. Do you think that’s an accurate portrayal, or are you fully capable of busting out some Lars Ulrich-esque tirades?
I honestly don't know how to answer that question and I wish I did.
